What this shows

Every character has a Unicode code point, written as U+ followed by hex digits (for example, "é" is U+00E9). In UTF-8, the encoding used by almost every web page, code points take 1 to 4 bytes. ASCII letters take 1, accented letters 2, most symbols 3, and emoji 4.

Finding invisible and look-alike characters

Copied text sometimes hides a non-breaking space (U+00A0), a zero-width space (U+200B) or a byte-order mark (U+FEFF), which can break code, passwords and spreadsheet formulas. Phishing links may also use a Cyrillic "а" (U+0430) that looks like a Latin "a" (U+0061). Paste suspicious text here to see exactly what it contains.

Frequently asked questions

How many bytes is an emoji?

Usually 4 bytes in UTF-8, and some emoji combine several code points.

What is U+00A0?

A non-breaking space. It looks like a space but stops a line breaking.
