How this password generator works
Passwords are made in your browser with the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), a cryptographically secure random number generator, rather than Math.random. It uses rejection sampling so that every character is equally likely. Nothing is sent over the internet, logged or saved: close the tab and the password exists only where you put it.
What makes a password strong?
Strength depends on length and on how many possible characters there are. It is measured in bits of entropy: length × log₂(pool size). A 16-character password using upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols has about 105 bits, far beyond what can be brute-forced. Length matters more than complexity: adding characters raises strength faster than adding symbol types.
Three random words (NCSC advice)
The UK's National Cyber Security Centre recommends three random words for passwords you need to remember, such as your email password. They are long, easy to type and much harder to guess than "P@ssw0rd1". The passphrase mode joins three randomly chosen words with hyphens and adds a number. Don't pick the words yourself from things about you (pets, teams, children's names), because those are easy to guess.
Good password habits
- Use a different password for every account, especially email and banking.
- Store them in a password manager. Most browsers and phones have one built in.
- Turn on two-step verification (2SV) wherever you can.
- Check whether your email has appeared in a data breach at Have I Been Pwned, and change any reused passwords.

Frequently asked questions
Is this password generator safe?
Yes. Passwords are created in your browser with the secure Web Crypto API and are never sent or stored.
How long should a password be?
At least 12 to 16 random characters, or three random words, as the NCSC suggests.
What is a good passphrase?
Three or more truly random words, for example Copper-Puffin-Lantern42, not words linked to you.
