How words are counted
A word is any group of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one, and numbers count as words, the same as Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Characters are counted with and without spaces, because some forms (such as UCAS personal statements or job applications) set a character limit that includes spaces.
Sentences are counted by full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line. Reading time assumes about 238 words a minute, the average for adult silent reading found in a 2019 review of research, and speaking time assumes about 140 words a minute for a talk or presentation.
Common UK word and character limits
- UCAS personal statement: 4,000 characters including spaces (the format changed for 2026 entry, with three questions sharing the limit)
- Text message (SMS): 160 characters per message
- Meta description for SEO: about 150–160 characters
- Post on X: 280 characters on a standard account
- University essays: usually ±10% of the stated word count. Check your course handbook.
Private by design
Your text never leaves your browser. There is no upload, server or storage, so it is safe for coursework, CVs and confidential drafts. You can check this by turning off your internet after the page loads: it still works.
Tips for hitting a word count
To cut words, remove filler ("very", "really", "in order to"), swap passive sentences for active ones, and merge short repeated points. To add depth, add an example, a figure or a counter-argument rather than padding. Planning your writing time? The date calculator counts the days to your deadline.
