How phonewords work
Phone keypads map letters to digits under the international standard ITU E.161: 2 = ABC, 3 = DEF, 4 = GHI, 5 = JKL, 6 = MNO, 7 = PQRS, 8 = TUV and 9 = WXYZ. Businesses use "vanity" numbers so customers remember them, for example 0800-FLOWERS. Type the word and the converter swaps each letter for its key, keeping digits, dashes and spaces as they are.
Things to check
Some phonewords are longer than a real number. US numbers have 10 digits after the 1, and UK numbers have 10 or 11 digits including the leading 0, so extra letters are often just decoration and ignored by the network. In the UK, 0800 and 0808 numbers are free to call from mobiles and landlines, while 09 premium-rate numbers can be expensive, so check the full number before you dial.
