Letters vs characters
A character counter counts everything, including spaces, digits and punctuation. This letter counter counts only the letters A to Z (in any case), so "Hello, World!" has 10 letters but 13 characters. Accented letters such as é and ñ are reported separately.
Letter frequency
The table shows how often each letter appears, from most to least common. In typical English text, E is the most common letter (about 12%), followed by T, A, O, I and N. Frequency analysis is how classic substitution ciphers are broken, and it's handy for word games, puzzles, crosswords and checking pangrams (sentences that use all 26 letters, such as "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog").
