How the spacebar test works
The timer starts on your first press and counts every press until time runs out. Holding the key down doesn't count: auto-repeat events are ignored, so only real presses score. Your score and presses per second are shown at the end, and your best score for each time mode is saved in your browser only.
Typical scores
Most people manage 5 to 7 presses a second in a 10-second test (50–70 presses). Fast gamers reach 8 to 10. Techniques that help: tap with your thumb rather than pressing down hard, keep your wrist relaxed, and try alternating two fingers. Like this? Try the CPS click test or the typing speed test.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good spacebar score?
About 60 to 70 presses in 10 seconds is above average.
Does holding space count?
No. Auto-repeat is ignored, so each press must be a separate key press.

More questions
Does it count emoji correctly?
Yes, the tool counts user-perceived characters where it matters, so most emoji count as one character even though they use several bytes behind the scenes.
Is my text private?
Yes. All processing happens in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to a server or stored.
Does it work with Welsh or other languages?
Yes. The tool works with any Unicode text, including Welsh accents such as ŵ and ŷ, and non-Latin scripts.
Why do different tools give slightly different counts?
Tools disagree on edge cases such as hyphenated words, numbers, URLs and line breaks. This tool explains its rules on the page so you know what is counted.
