How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a "word" is standardised as 5 characters (including spaces). This test shows gross WPM (all characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes) and net WPM, which only counts correctly typed characters, so mistakes lower your score. Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly. Correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red as you go.
What is a good typing speed?
- Under 30 WPM: beginner or two-finger typing
- 40 WPM: about average for adults
- 50–70 WPM: good, and fine for most office jobs
- 70–90 WPM: fast, the kind of speed some data-entry and admin jobs ask for
- 100+ WPM: very fast; competitive typists exceed 150
How to type faster
Learn touch typing with your fingers resting on the home row (ASDF and JKL;), look at the screen rather than the keyboard, and aim for accuracy first, because speed follows. Short daily practice beats occasional long sessions. Your best score for each test length is saved in your browser only. Want a quick reflex challenge? Try the CPS test or spacebar counter.
