Mean, median and mode
- Mean: add everything up and divide by how many there are. It's sensitive to extreme values.
- Median: the middle value once sorted, or the average of the two middle values. It's better for skewed data such as house prices or salaries.
- Mode: the value that appears most often. There can be more than one, or none.
- Range: the largest value minus the smallest.
For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8 the mean is 16.57, the median is 15, the mode is 8 and the range is 38. For a weighted average, for example coursework and exam marks, use the grade calculator.
