White vs pink vs brown noise
- White noise has equal energy at every frequency. It sounds like TV static or a hissing fan. It's good for masking speech and sudden sounds, but some people find it harsh.
- Pink noise falls by 3 dB per octave, so it sounds more balanced and natural, like steady rain or wind. It's a popular choice for sleep and focus.
- Brown (red) noise falls by 6 dB per octave, giving a deep rumble like a waterfall or the inside of an aeroplane. Many people say it helps them concentrate.
The noise is generated in your browser, so there is no download and no ads. Use the softness slider to roll off the high frequencies, and the sleep timer to fade out gradually.
Safe listening
For babies, keep any white-noise source at a low volume and well away from the cot. A rough guide is no louder than a quiet shower (about 50 dB). For tinnitus, sound therapy should be discussed with your GP or audiologist. You might also like the binaural beats generator.

More questions
Why does my browser ask for permission?
Microphone, camera and screen access always need your explicit permission. The browser shows a prompt, and you can revoke access at any time from the padlock icon in the address bar.
Is anything recorded or uploaded?
No. Audio and video are processed locally in your browser. If the tool lets you save a file, it is created on your device only.
It does not work on my iPhone – why?
Check that Safari (or your browser) has permission under Settings, that no other app is using the mic or camera, and that you are on iOS 14.3 or later. Screen recording in the browser is not supported on iOS.
Should I use headphones?
For tone, noise and binaural tools, yes: start at a low volume. Binaural beats only work with headphones because each ear needs a different tone.
