How ERA is calculated
ERA = 9 × earned runs ÷ innings pitched. It's the number of earned runs a pitcher would give up over a full nine-inning game. In box scores, ".1" and ".2" mean one third and two thirds of an inning (one or two outs), so 45.2 innings is 45⅔, not 45.2. With 20 earned runs in 45⅔ innings, the ERA is 3.94.
In Major League Baseball, an ERA under 3.00 is excellent and around 4.00 is roughly average. Baseball and softball are growing in the UK through the BaseballSoftballUK leagues. Many softball and youth games are 7 innings, so change the innings per game.
