How to calculate hours between two times
Convert both clock times to minutes from midnight, subtract start from end, then subtract any unpaid break. Example: 09:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes. Minus a 30-minute lunch = 480 minutes = 8.0 hours.
Overnight shifts
Tick Overnight shift when the end time is after midnight (for example 22:00–06:00). The calculator adds 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.
Decimal hours for payroll
Many payroll systems want decimal hours: 8 hours 15 minutes = 8.25. Divide total minutes by 60. For adding several durations in hh:mm:ss, use the time calculator. For business days between calendar dates, use the working days calculator.
