How the groups are made
The list is shuffled with a secure random shuffle and then dealt out like cards, one name to each group in turn. That keeps the group sizes within one person of each other. With 12 names in 5 groups, you get two groups of 3 and three groups of 2, never a 4 and a 1.
Choose people per group when you know the team size, for example pairs for a partner activity or fives for five-a-side. Choose number of groups when you have a fixed number of tables, rooms or breakout sessions.
Is it fair?
Yes. Picks use the browser's cryptographically secure random generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with rejection sampling, so every option has exactly the same chance, with no "modulo bias". Nothing you enter leaves your device, and the page doesn't remember past results. For a public draw, such as a raffle or prize, share your screen or record it so everyone can see the result.
